The Traffic Engineer is responsible to plan organize, direct, and supervise traffic engineering and transportation planning operations; and to perform a variety of professional and technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the advanced journey level in the Traffic Engineer series. Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed, complexity of duties assigned, independence of action taken, amount of time spent performing the duties, and by the nature of the public contact made. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series, including providing direct supervision over assigned personnel including Registered Engineers. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned areas of responsibility.
OPPORTUNITY
The Traffic Engineer position is an excellent opportunity for a career motivated individual to provide responsible staff assistance to the Director of Public Works and oversee the Traffic and Electrical Division. The City of Modesto is searching for the ideal candidate with a strong background in traffic signal operation and upgrades and has knowledge of current technologies to achieve optimal signal performance. Teamwork and strong customer service skills are a must. We are looking for an individual who will take pride in the quality of their work and who will possess the ability to successfully coordinate with various departments, businesses, other agencies, and all stakeholders.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
Three years of increasingly responsible professional traffic engineering experience, including one year of supervisory responsibility.
Training:
Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering, traffic engineering, or a related field. A Master’s Degree in Transportation is desirable.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.
Possession of a valid Certificate of Registration as a Traffic Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
