Conducts general technical analysis of line functions and operations as needed to anticipate and prevent line problems; makes recommendations for line specifications on new construction and circuit enhancements; prepares routine reports of activities; uses various equipment, tools, and vehicles in maintaining an electrical distribution system to assure against loss of service.
Performs construction, installation, maintenance and repair of substations, and circuits for overhead and underground power lines; digs trenches and lays pipe for underground lines; assists in building new substations and maintains existing substations.
Performs connecting, installing, maintaining and repairing of energized overhead and underground power distribution and transmission lines operating at voltages of 12kV, 46kV, and 138kV; operates line trucks, can or will learn to operate a backhoe, dump trucks, line working apparatus and heavy equipment; digs pole holes and trenches, sets and frames poles; climbs poles, descends into vaults or trenches; strings lines; splices and sags wire on live or dead circuits; connects or disconnects transformers, cutouts, meters and guy wires, changes insulators on high voltage lines; makes URD splicing and terminations; locates damaged lines and poles; trouble shoots power distribution equipment to determine problems; splices cables; repairs, sets and terminates padmount transformers; conducts voltage and amperage checks and system tests ; replaces apparatus on cross arms; hangs insulators; replaces and repairs fuses, grounds, etc.
Responds to emergency calls, resolves power problems, and restores power outages; makes connections and disconnections for customers; informs public of pending outages due to repair; repairs streetlights, trims trees and removes other line obstructions; explains problems to public; requests cooperation during repair; uses various technical tools including crimpers, hot sticks, cutters, body belts, bucket truck, wire pullers, etc.
Assists in maintaining inventory of materials and supplies, and should be proficient in working with instruments, meters, instrument transformers and related equipment. Performs a variety of maintenance testing, repair on electrical instruments including single phase and polyphase watt hour and demand meters, recording volt and amp meters, transformers, etc., used in electrical utility programs for testing equipment; tests and maintains equipment; determines cause of meter malfunction.
Tests personal protective equipment used in high voltage work, including rubber gloves, etc.; performs complex electrical maintenance projects on city buildings and facilities; runs power lines, installs breakers, installs main power boxes.
Performs miscellaneous duties affecting the overall delivery and quality of power services; including, line locations for underground system; pulls wire; completes terminations and performs shut-offs, utilizes rubber gloving and hot sticking methods; prepares rigging for poles; assists with electrical inspections; performs substation readings; performs permanent power and temporary power connections; responds to power outages.
Performs other related duties as required.
Wage increase consideration: Must successfully complete training program and be eligible for on call duties.
Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school or equivalent; plus, two (2) years of specialized training provided through vocational college or professionally sponsored certificate program; AND
Four (4) years of experience performing above and related duties through an approved and documented apprenticeship training program; OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possess a minimum of a Utah Class B commercial driver license
Brigham City is a member and supporter of the IPSA (Intermountain Power Superintendents Association) and as such supports journey level applicants with an IPSA Journey Certificate. Applicants with other Journey Certificates will be considered dependent upon documented hours of completion through related job training hours and BAT (Bureau of Apprenticeship Training) files which will need to be provided to be considered for employment, and proof of a board-certified testing procedure both written (transformer connections, technical job related etc.) and Practical (pole climbing skills and job specific field tasks).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of general electrical engineering principles and practices; Math skills working with load calculations, trigonometric functions for angles, load strains, and power factor calculations are beneficial, legal environment associated with power utility projects, construction and maintenance; modern methods, principles and practices of power transmission and distribution; operation of meters, gauges and instruments associated with electricity and electric power generation and distribution; metering equipment maintenance; equipment and materials used in construction and maintenance operations; current codes, standards, safety practices and principals involved in power utility operations. Journey level skill in the use of various heavy equipment, hand and power tools crimpers, hot sticks, cutters, body belts, bucket truck, line truck, wire pullers, etc. Ability to work and recognize the essential quality of interpersonal and communication skills due to the nature of hazards and technicalities associated with the high voltage power industry; contribute positive input to job planning, situational awareness of conditions where all aspects of consideration are important to the effectiveness and safety of daily activities; keep operating records and prepare reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.
Special Qualifications:
Must be a certified journey electric line worker as outlined above.
Must possess a valid state of Class A Utah Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
Must successfully demonstrate pole climbing skills and knowledge of safety procedures per OSHA and NESC requirements.
Must maintain annual continuing education requirements related to licenses and certifications.
Must be CPR certified.
Must be willing to accept on-call assignments after hours and on weekends and holidays.
